Litmus Test

So, what do you think? Does your new sign fit you like a glove? Or do you reckon Al’s Theorem is a bit of a damp squib? Leave a comment.

Some factors that could skew the results: (1) Using your date of birth — your due date should be more accurate. (2) Your due date being on or near the cusp between two signs — your traits could be a blend of the two. (3) Your mother being near or north of the equator at any time between conception and birth.

Acupuncture was long considered a pseudoscience in The West, but its effectiveness is now almost universally accepted. And I’d like to see some serious recognition of astrology — not in predicting the future, but as a tool to better understand our varied characteristics, and how they each play an important role in society.

So your comment may just help to make history!

I think the swop is quite accurate. i'm a leo; and the underlying leo things match well with aquarius.

nice work!

I think that its not all that accurate. Both star sign descriptions the old and new show is someway my traits. I don't think that either of them is spot on, so what happens now, am I supposed to be both???

Very confusing when reading the cheesy star signs in the magazines.

Yes, I’ve noticed the similarity between some of the six-apart star signs. If the theory is correct, this would explain why northern hem. star signs are generally accepted as correct in the southern hem. The clearest differences are Virgo vs Pisces – very different.

For Leo vs Aquarius, the strongest differences are in the ‘potential weaknesses’ section.

If you’ve always been told you were a Leo but were born in the southern hem. it could be you’re actually an Aquarius. If you were expected to be born mid-July you could have some Capricorn traits mixed in with the Aquarius ones. Or if you were expected mid-August you could expect to have some Pisces traits mixed in with those of Aquarius.

Note that I’m not suggesting astrology can predict the future, only that it can give our likely personality traits. So if you read the cheesy stuff in the magazines for Aquarius instead of Leo you’ll be none the wiser!

But self-discovery is good, and the notion that the date we’re conceived could so affect our emerging personalities is fascinating.

I liked my old sign, the Gemini. it fit me well, but it is quite similar to my new sign the sagitarius.
Actually what is really weird is that i was more like the Gemini description during my life in England, but since i've moved to Australia i've just thought about it and i now fit the description of the sagitarius.
Weird? or just plain stupid of me?

Interesting. Well, according to the theory your star sign traits are determined before you’re even born, so I’m afraid you don’t get to swap over if you emigrate. ;)

It’s a big thing, uprooting, and not surprising that your psyche would get shaken up a bit. You might get more Gemini-like again over time – let me know!

Certainly, I’ve noticed how similar most of the signs that are six apart are. I speculate that this is why no one, as far as I know, has come up with this theory of different Southern Hemisphere star signs before. Virgo and Pisces are the best test, as they’re very different – that would be the best way of testing this theory.

Considering how far away the stars are, and assuming that scientifically gravitational forces have some bearing on us as bodies mainly made of water, the relevance of Southern or Northern Hemisphere is insignificant.

In experiments to do with asking random people are they a particular personality everyone thought they suited the personality, it was then revealed that the personality profile was identical for all people asked.

This is for the Northern and Southern hemisphere. What if we live on the equator?

Wassa, my theory on this is detailed in a couple of other posts – mainly this one: http://thegurusguru.blogspot.com/2007/02/new-star-signs-down-under.html

Basically, it’s that the personality traits commonly attributed to star signs have nothing to do with the stars and everything to do with when in the year we are conceived.

The body’s varying of personality by season could be an elegant way of giving society lots of Aquarians, Pisceans and Arians – because they were conceived in summer – and, for instance, less Virgos. Or, rather less interestingly, there could simply be an effect from differing levels of Vitamin D from sunlight and nutrients from seasonal foods.

And yes, it’s true that people have a tendency to try to associate themselves with the traits their star sign says they’re supposed to have, and there could be nothing empirically relevant in astrology whatsoever. But, well I’m a Virgo, and the fit is – frustratingly at times – perfect! ;)

Alexis, a great question, and something I’ve thought about. Maybe there’s no need for Virgos on the equator. :p

It would be fair to say that most people living there are concerned more with subsistence than navel-gazing. And there seems to be a strong sense of community, with people tending not to clash. Is it possible that that’s because the personality spectrum is narrower?

Mother nature is astonishingly good at fine-tuning our genomes for our environment. The UV at ground level is affected by humidity as well as latitude, and there is a 90% correlation between shade of skin colour and average UV levels. It makes sense that she has other ‘tricks up her sleave’ to accommodate the differing needs of social groups in different parts of the world. But we have yet to unlock them all.

I /was/ a Virgo, and I used to think it described me perfectly, but I dont know, I've changed since I last look at my star sign, and now Pisces describes me almost perfectly. I'm going to ask my friends, but yeah.

Welcome back, Anonymous – hey I thought you said you were a Leo!

But seriously, as I’ve said above, if there’s anything to star signs then it’s all set by the time you’re born – I’m afraid you can’t chop and change between the Northern and Southern Hemisphere signs at will!

I'm still a little skeptical about this "swop", but what I would like to know is:
If our star signs change, does this effect the Chinese Horoscope as well? i.e. our birth stones, our animal & elements. (earth, air, fire or water) Because all these aspects effect our personalities too.

(earth, air, fire or water) All these do effect our personalities, so will these change too?

Anonymous #3, what I’m suggesting is that the personality traits long associated with the 12 star signs are actually observations of people conceived during different parts of the year, and the term ‘horoscope’ as in predicting the future has no grounds in science whatsoever (other than that personality traits affect the probability that any one person will take a particular path).

The Chinese were thousands of years ahead of their time in many respects. Acupuncture, for instance, is empirically effective but still little understood. Maybe there is a theory that can explain Chinese astrology, such as the solar variation cycle that determines sun spot activity. But I haven’t come up with such a theory yet.

Our personalities are affected by nature and nurture – our biology and our environment. Our futures are in our own hands, and are not determined by the shape of the tea leaves at the bottom of the cup!

I am and always have been an aries but have always been a few days into it. I'm the 26th march.
But I have always felt I have alot more pisces qualities in me than aries.
I have never felt at all like an aries as I don't have the boldest of personalities and I'm certainly not firey?

I dont know whether I think they are correct or not.

Mine's not entirely accurate (for either of my star signs)...

Scorpio (old) & Taurus(new) are fairly similar, yet there are a few flaws to how they fit me. Overall, however, I would say they are both about 85% accurate.

I've never really paid much attention to horoscopes, but (after reading about the "new star signs", I reckon I'm going to pay more attention!

Some spamming going on here, methinks – three comments by Anonymouses misspelling ‘swap’. Giving you the benefit of the doubt, Anonymous #5:

Cancer = tenacious; Capricorn = ambitious/achieving. Cancer = cautious; Capricorn = compliant. Cancer = moody; Capricorn = melancholy.

Plenty of similarities. So maybe you’re not like my Cancer, either!

Thanks for posting, interesting to see them swapped.

For me and my kids, I'd say it's debatable which is more accurate.

My parents signs are swapped, and the Northern Hemisphere signs are far more apt. (They were both born in the Southern Hemisphere).

Thanks. Most signs are actually pretty similar to the one six signs away – see
this comment. Virgo/Pisces are the least similar, so best for rating this theory. Of course you don’t get to pick and choose – you either use this system for interpreting all star signs or none. ;)

Im very dissatisified. Western Astrology isnt accurate. Sidreal astrology is the most accurate.
For western astrology, im supposed to be a Sag and that is not accurate at all for me. Im not expressive. Im not extroverted, i love being alone.
With this 'new' sign switch on this website, it is even less accurate. Im no where near a Gemini. Im not expressive, not enthusiastic, not outgoing, not extroverted. It makes me sad that there is so
Much false information out there andthat people actually believe it. Im very analytical and ive done Lots an lots of research, from the library, from legit websites, from astrologers, and i can very confidentally tell you that you need to do your own research and not just believe in some persons theory. Thats why its called a theory, becUse there is not enough evidence to prove
It.
In sidereal astrolgy, it focuses on the real dates that the sun passes through the constellations, and western astrology is dying out because it is not accuarate.
In sidereal astrology, im a scorpio, and it fits me perfectly. Im quiet, very reserved, very secretive, very intellectual. And i hope you all do some real indepth research ad find real information and not just follow theories. Thank you. Goodbye.

If there was proof of any link between the constellations and human traits that would be big news. There is not. As for the theory presented here, that is based on biology and Earth’s seasons – it is not about ‘astrology’ in the conventional sense. (Refer to the post ‘Al’s Theorem’ for clarification.) Requesting feedback on this post is about as much research as I’ll probably be able to do on it. But note that the theory is not about choosing between two opposite star signs – in your case, Gemini would only apply if your parents were living (well) below the equator when they conceived you. And ninety percent of the population – and most visitors to this page – are from north of the equator.

So I am a Pisces. I was born in the northern hemisphere but practically on the equator. I never really felt very piscean. I think Virgo fits very well. What does that tell you?

5/26/2016 7:24 am
Blogger Al Cad said...

Well, if you were a true Virgo you never would have written Piscean
with a lower case P! :p

It’s possible that you are a blend of Pisces and Aquarius; maybe even Aquarius and Sagittarius, as the seasonal cues would be a lot different near the equator.
